"A child's toy!" was people's response in around 1861 when Philipp Reis of Germany presented his new invention, a device that could send music and voices through wires. Is the telephone a toy?
The brochure "Can you hear me?" looks at the pioneers and inventors of the world of telecommunication. From the Angarians who sent messages by mounted courier to the smoke signals sent via torch telegraphy as early as 450 B.C., this brochure shows how telegraphy, telephony and the radio were developed in the 18th century and how they have changed our society.
The brochure is part of an educational package which includes also an additional e-lesson on the Internet. Even though this teaching material was designed for level I secondary school pupils, some elements of it (e.g. the worksheets) are also appropriate for 5th and 6th grade pupils.
