SchoolNetGuide No. 2 - "Infrastructure"
What is a network? What is a LAN? And what do I need for my school? The SchoolNetGuide 2 aims to provide answers to these questions. It is primarily aimed at technical infrastructure managers at schools, but is also suitable for other interested parties.
After deciding to use computers and the Internet for teaching purposes, each school undergoes four different phases. The SchoolNetGuide 2 contains an overview of these phases.

Offline: There are only individual computers that are not linked to each other and are generally available only to teachers.

Stand-Alone: The pupils have the opportunity to work with computers but there is no internal network and no Internet connection.

Mixed: The individual work stations are linked to form one or more network islands. This enables synergies to be leveraged and allows schools to try out network applications.

State-of-the-Art: All computers are united in a homogeneous system. This enables all the functions of up-to-date network technology to be exploited and all hardware components to be used efficiently.
The phases described are then illustrated by individual practical examples and supplemented with tips on purchasing, organisation and maintenance.

The SchoolNetGuide 2 «Infrastructure» is available in German and French and can be obtained from Swisscom free of charge while stocks last.
