What will life be like in the future?
If you think about your future and the future of the next generation, sooner or later you'll come across the buzzword "sustainability". It comes up time and time again whenever we’re discussing anything to do with preserving the environment, a functioning economy and social equality. Sustainability describes courses of action which help secure our quality of life in the long-term on a global scale.
Schools play a key role when it comes to raising awareness of social and ecological issues among the next generation.
Swisscom is committed to protecting the environment. The company has been running an effective environmental management programme since 1998. For example, we use fresh air to cool our data centres rather than deploying cooling systems which consume a large amount of electricity. We are also the largest purchaser of solar energy in Switzerland. What's more, we offer environmentally friendly products and services to our customers, e.g. the first solar-powered mobile phone and low-radiation cordless phones.
In the sustainability dossier, you’ll find a whole host of ideas for lessons .
Everything you need to know about mobile phones for 10 to 15-year-olds
SWICO Recycling
The Foundation for Practical Environmental Protection Switzerland ("Pusch") has produced a dossier of lessons all about mobile phones on behalf of SWICO Recycling. The focus of the dossier is on raising pupils’ awareness of environmental issues and recycling. The 15 teaching modules with complete assignments and teacher’s notes chart the life of the mobile phone from sourcing raw materials to consumption and communication to proper disposal and recycling.

Solar Impulse – making the unimaginable possible
The Solar Impulse project team headed by Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg is constructing an innovative solar plane that consumes very little energy: with the wingspan of a jumbo jet (64 metres), the weight of a medium-sized passenger car (1600 kg) and the power of a scooter (8 kilowatts), Piccard aims to fly round the earth in a solar-powered plane in 2012 without using any fuel at all. The project offers schools some great material for visionary presentations, discussions on solar energy, competitions and much more...

Protection of minors in the media and media competency
Effective protection of minors in the media is necessary in order for children and young people to learn how to use new media in the long term. Swisscom has compiled all the information that is available on this subject on the Internet so that parents and teachers can advise children on their media use. It is important to us that children learn how to use mobiles and the Internet properly.

Long-term apprenticeships
Some companies are only concerned about maximising profit – social responsibility is a foreign word to them ((Evtl. etwas heikle Formulierung. Normalerweise machen wir kein Competitor-Bashing…)). Not Swisscom. We train more than 800 young people every year to become media technicians, IT specialists, commercial assistants, retail specialists and telematics technicians. During their time at Swisscom, apprentices choose the projects that interest them and will further their career - an exciting training concept for independent young people...
