Static IP address.
What is a static IP address and what do I need it for?

The difference between static and dynamic IP addresses

The IP address corresponds to a unique number for each computer in a network (e.g. 192.168.5.87).

Static IP address

Computers permanently connected to the Internet, mainly servers, always have the same static IP address.

Dynamic IP address

Computers that are not always online are assigned a dynamic IP address by the provider during dial-up. This saves addresses, which is important because the number of addresses are not infinite.

With which subscription can I use a static IP address?

The static IP address can be ordered optionally, in conjunction with the connection technology ADSL (PPP) (max. 5'000 kBit/s), for DSL start, DSL mini, DSL standard and Infinity.

Due to technical reasons, static IP addresses cannot be used for Swisscom TV, DSL packages and NATEL® subscriptions or all products using the connection technology VDSL (DHCP).

Why do I need a static IP address?

If you want to use the Internet for normal purposes, i.e. for surfing, e-mailing, chatting etc, you do not need a static IP address. You will not notice that you have a different address each time you are online.

You need the static IP address only for special applications:

  • If you operate your own web or FTP server at home (the majority of companies and private customers have their servers operated by providers).
  • If you operate a RAS server or a Virtual Private Network (if you login to a company computer from outside).
  • If you operate your own game server for online computer games via the Internet.

Permanent connection to the Internet

Up until now, your DSL connection would have been disconnected after 20 hours (if inactive after 30 minutes). In case of customers who have subscribed to a static IP address, Internet will only be disconnected about once a month for maintenance purposes.

Charges

CHF 19/month for 1 static IP address (only for customers with DSL).

One-off activation charge: CHF 29 (free when you register, until further notice).

Order

You can order a static IP address directly in the customer centre.
